10th Anniversary of Gwanak Gang Gam-chan Festival Held at Nakseongdae Park
The Gwanak Cultural Foundation announced that the "2026 Gwanak Gang Gam-chan Festival," hosted by Gwanak-gu and organized by the foundation, was held around Nakseongdae Park from October 16 to 17, marking its 10th anniversary this year. The festival featured a variety of cultural and artistic programs combining history, performance art, and future technology.
General Gang Gam-chan was a civil official and renowned military commander of the Goryeo Dynasty who lived from 948 to 1031. He is known for decisively defeating the Khitan forces at the Battle of Guju in 1019, protecting Goryeo, and was born in what is now Gwanak-gu, Seoul. According to legend, a star fell to mark his birth, which is said to be the origin of the name "Nakseongdae" (meaning "falling star platform"), the name of the area in present-day Gwanak-gu.
This year's festival was directed by So Hong-sam, CEO of the Gwanak Cultural Foundation, under the theme "Tomorrow Gang Gam-chan – Opening the Future," reinterpreting the historical value of General Gang Gam-chan through contemporary culture and art. The main program was the special 10th anniversary performance, "Gang Gam-chan, Coming from the Stars & Aerial Fireworks Performance," held at 7 p.m. on the 17th on the main stage of the Grand Plaza at Nakseongdae Park. This large-scale outdoor performance was inspired by the star motif from the legend of General Gang Gam-chan's birth, combining traditional performing arts, Korean dance, live music, video, and aerial fireworks performances. Participants included countertenor Lewis Choi, violinist KON, the b-boy crew MB Crew, an animation crew, and the 5th cohort of "Little Gang Gam-chan."
Through this festival held at Nakseongdae Park, residents of Gwanak-gu were able to experience the story of General Gang Gam-chan, a historical figure born in the area, through performances. As a cultural event utilizing the region's historical assets, it provided residents with an opportunity to enjoy performances and exhibitions together in a nearby park.
