남서울미술관 ‘지나가는 자리’ 전시회 열려
관악구 남현동에 위치한 서울시립남서울미술관에서는 ‘조숙진: 지나가는 자리’라는 주제로 2026년 11월15일까지 전시를 한다.
‘조숙진: 지나가는 자리’는 남서울미술관 ‘한국 대표 조각가’ 시리즈의 두번째 전시로, 지난 40여 년간 뉴욕을 중심으로 회화와 조각, 설치, 사진, 퍼포먼스, 공공 프로젝트, 건축에 이르기까지 다양한 형식으로 작업해 온 조숙진의 작업 태도와 존재에 대한 성찰을 조망합니다. 전시의 제목인 ‘지나가는 자리’는 조숙진의 작업 세계를 관통하는 존재론적 통찰을 함축한다.
우리 모두는 선형적 시간 속에서 결국 지나가는 존재이지만, 작가에게 지나감은 단순한 소멸이나 상실을 뜻하지 않는다.
조숙진은 버려진 나무와 사물을 그저 재료로 다루는 대신, 인간보다 오랜 시간을 지나오며 고유한 기억을 품은 존재로서 받아들이고, 예술을 통해 그 안에 내재한 생명의 가능성을 발견해 왔다.
이번 전시는 프롤로그와 에필로그 그리고 세 개의 파트로 구성된다.
전시는 프롤로그 ‘목격자’를 시작으로 파트 1 ‘존재와 비존재’, 파트 2 ‘공간 사이’, 파트 3 ‘만물의 이치’를 거쳐 에필로그 ‘하나를 이루는 세계’로 이어진다.
이번 전시는 작가의 주요 작품과 신작, 미공개 드로잉 및 아카이브를 포함한 100여점의 작품을 통해, 초기 작업부터 최근 프로젝트에 이르기까지 일관되게 이어져 온 그의 예술적 실천을 조망한다.
관람료는 무료이며, 1월1일과 매주 월요일은 휴관이다. 화~금요일까지는 오전10시~오후8시까지이며, 토, 일, 공휴일은 오전10시~오후6시까지다.

"Traces of Passing" Exhibition Opens at Nam Seoul Museum of Art
The Seoul Museum of Art's Nam Seoul branch, located in Namhyeon-dong, Gwanak-gu, is holding an exhibition titled "Cho Sook Jin: Traces of Passing" until November 15, 2026.
"Cho Sook Jin: Traces of Passing" is the second exhibition in the Nam Seoul Museum of Art's "Korea's Representative Sculptors" series. It examines the working attitude and reflections on existence of artist Cho Sook Jin, who has worked across diverse forms—including painting, sculpture, installation, photography, performance, public projects, and architecture—based mainly in New York for over 40 years. The exhibition's title, "Traces of Passing," encapsulates the ontological insight that runs through Cho Sook Jin's body of work.
We are all beings who ultimately pass through linear time, but for the artist, passing does not simply mean disappearance or loss. Rather than treating discarded wood and objects merely as materials, Cho Sook Jin accepts them as beings that carry their own memories, having existed for longer than humans, and through art she has discovered the possibility of life inherent within them.
This exhibition is composed of a prologue, an epilogue, and three parts. It begins with the prologue "Witness," moves through Part 1 "Being and Non-being," Part 2 "Between Spaces," and Part 3 "The Order of All Things," and concludes with the epilogue "A World Forming One."
Through approximately 100 works—including the artist's major pieces, new works, previously unreleased drawings, and archival materials—this exhibition offers an overview of her artistic practice, which has remained consistent from her early work to her most recent projects.
Admission is free. The museum is closed on January 1 and every Monday. Opening hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
